According to research, Mucuna pruriens contains 40mg/g of a compound called levodopa or L-DOPA which is a precursor to the neurotransmitter to several neurotransmitters, including adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine. When L-dopa crosses the blood-brain barrier, it increases dopamine levels in the brain, regulating mood and cognition. 

Dopamine also increases other youth hormones such as testosterone which explains its association with increasing libido, fertility and overall energy levels.  Animal studies have shown an increase in mounting frequency by male rats and a decrease in post ejaculatory intervals.
